According to John Meunier of the Buyer's Digest, the paper was surprised by the overwhelming response for the contest in its first week. The publication will continue the contest throughout the 2006 race season with fans eligible to win free tickets to the remaining 17 races at the high banked, quarter-mile oval.
This weekend's events include Saturday's annual Merchants Bank Car Show on Main Street in downtown Barre. The teams from the ACT Tour as well as Thunder Road's three weekend divisions (NAPA Tiger Sportsmen, Allen Lumber Street Stocks and PowerShift Warriors) will roll into town between 7 and 9:00 am. The show's official hours are from 9:00 am until 12 noon.
At 10:30 am, the action moves to the head of Main Street near the park for the Vermont Frost Heaves Pit Stop contest. An estimated seven teams are expected to participate including a team each from Barre City and Barre Town. The teams will be made up of local officials.
As high noon, the engines of all of the cars on display will fire in preparation for the annual parade to the track. The race cars will travel the 2.5 miles with a police and fire engine escort. Practice follows at 1:00 pm.
