OK, I am calmed down. Here is the deal on the idea of a Reserve Feature for a major event. It seems to me that if you are going to ask race teams to come to your event in large numbers, you have to do two things.
First and what is probably the most important thing to a race team is THEY WANT TO RACE!!!!!
Second they would like to at least have a purse that will help defray some of their expenses.
Sounds simple, but it really does have some consequences. Many fans want the drivers thrown into the Lion’s Den like in the days of the great Roman gladiators. Most of the nut jobs back then were much happier to see the Gladiators gobbled up by the lions one at a time than they were to see the ‘last man standing’ who won! Race fans are somewhat similar. “If they are not good enough to qualify---send them home without food or water!!” Wow, nasty stuff. (Hey, c’mon fans did you realize there are only so many spots available in the feature and even some of the best racers in the Northeast are not going to qualify…give ‘em a break!)
My feeling is if you ask a race team to support your event, you are asking them ALL to spend the same amount of money on gas to get there, accommodations in many instances, fuel for the race car, pit entrance fees, tire costs, and of course, convincing a bunch of people to take the time away from family, reunions, soccer games, etc., to help with the preparation of the car before and during the event.
It seems to me that the least you can do is structure your event so that after all the tension of qualifying is over, the worst case scenario for those who fail to qualify for the main event, for whatever reason--flat tire, got dumped, lousy draw, missed the set-up, whatever--those teams still have an opportunity to race their cars.
Now comes the RESERVE FEATURE at the ACT International 500 weekend. I love this addition to the overall weekend. If we get a large car count, say 60 cars or more, we have posted a purse that is LARGER THAN ANY 100 LAP ACT TOUR EVENTS IN 2013!! It is a shame if you don’t get one of the qualified spots for the inaugural International 500 portion of the weekend, but at least there is an opportunity to race, get paid a decent purse and the experience can be a favorable race effort, instead of a completely frustrating one.
I say three cheers for the Reserve Feature…any racer can end up having a fun experience in spite of the disappointment, and the fans are going to love this part of the ACT International 500 weekend----
