Milton CAT Midsummer Classic 250 Once Again Delivers Drama, Intensity at White Mountain

N. Woodstock, NH — Twenty-six Milton CAT American-Canadian Tour teams representing four New England states and the Canadian Province of Quebec converged on White Mountain Motorsports Park for the 9th annual Milton CAT Midsummer Classic 250 on Saturday. Plus/Minus qualifying action saw D.J. Shaw, the only two-time winner of the prestigious, extra-distance event, earn the pole position alongside Thunder Road Speedbowl regular Justin Prescott in the 04VT A.H. Fence Company machine that Shaw piloted to two ACT Tour championships!

Shaw ran away early through a pair of cautions for the spinning Brandon Lambert #77AZ and Marcel Gravel’s #86VT Toyota. Erick Sands faced another heartbreaking early end on lap 40 with mechanical woes followed quickly by a blown right front on the Jeff Cote #51QC sending him pit-side under green flag conditions. Drama for the top-dogs continued for former Kulwicki Driver Development Program (KDDP) champion Derek Gluchacki had his plans ruined by a broken trailing arm by lap 67.

Lap 100 brought the competition caution for Sunoco Race refueling only with all but two drivers opting to return to the pits for fresh Hoosier Racing Tires and adjustments. Father/son duo Brian Hoar and Justin Prescott remained the only cars on track during the pit cycle and led the field on the return to green flag racing. Prescott would lead the restart but his eight-time ACT champion father Brian Hoar took over on lap 103 before Shaw powered back on lap 109.

The 250-lap format continued to bring the mechanical gremlins to teams on track with Ryan Morgan the next to go down on lap 113, coming to a stop on the backstretch to call out the caution. 53 laps later tires began to show their wear as point leader Gabe Brown came to a halt atop turn two with a flat right front tire. The disaster wasn’t over for Brown who brought out the very next caution on lap 218 with another flat right front shoe as Jesse Switser and DJ Shaw went to war up front.

With $10,000 on the line, Shaw and Switser went physical, swapping lanes and paint around the White Mountain quarter mile with Switser pulling away with the lead on lap 219. Switser looked poised to take his second Milton CAT Midsummer Classic 250 triumph before his right front tire went flat coming off turn four to call out the final caution on lap 238.

It was up to Jake Johnson and Brandon Gray for the final twelve laps with Shaw and Kaiden Fisher fighting for third. Johnson held his #91CT up high with Gray stuck like glue to the white line on the bottom. Gray got to Johnson’s bumper under the white flag, pulling up to his door as they motored side-by-side into turn three but it was Jake Johnson who drove off on the outside groove to take his first career Milton CAT American-Canadian Tour victory in the biggest event of the summer!

With Johnson and the Hartwell Motorsports team $10,000 richer, Brandon Gray held tight for a strong second-place run over Kaiden Fisher in third. D.J. Shaw brought home fourth after leading the majority of the 250 lap showdown with Jonathan Bouvrette bouncing back from qualifying woes to finish fifth.

Justin Prescott took home sixth, Bay Stater Ryan Kuhn finished seventh over Brian Hoar while Chris Pelkey barely edged out fellow Thunder Road full-timer Stephen Martin at the line for ninth and tenth, respectively.

The Milton CAT American-Canadian Tour is back in action in two weeks with the rain-delayed Great North Woods 150 at Riverside Speedway & Adventure Park in Groveton, New Hampshire on Sunday, August 16.
