McKennedy Uses Late Race Pass to Topple Christopher Jr. for $5K Nutmeg State 50 Honors
/Thompson, CT — A great night of weather and talented fields greeted the crowd that entered Thompson Speedway on Wednesday night with a pit area containing nearly one hundred competitors for the Nutmeg State 50 program presented by Twisted Tea.
The Mini Stocks started off feature racing with Dave Trudeau and Sean Olden both holding out after their spins for the caution flag to rejoin the field. Under green flag conditions, though, rookie Bill Porter and returning high-marker Ryan Pomposelli put on a clean side-by-side race out front before Pomposelli broke through with five to go and motored to his first win of the season followed by Porter and Tim Dorr.
The Thompson Sunoco Modifieds took the field for their 50-lap main under the leadership of rookie Zach Sangermano, but it was Danny Cates who quickly took the point. Sangermano ended up in the Turn 2 wall early off the nerf bars of the Jon Puleo #7 with Puleo sent to the tail for his assistance. It was once again the Todd Owen versus Keith Rocco show for second place, the two swapping paint and position time and time again just before Cates expired at the line on lap 12 to end his reign.
Just after halfway, point leader Jon Puleo was given the black flag with white smoke billowing from his Mr. Rooter machine from a leaking power steering line burning off under the hood. Keith Rocco had nothing but smooth sailing to the end to claim his second win of the season followed by a strong run by Derek Ramstrom and Todd Owen coming back for third.
Twenty-two Moonlight Physicians Network Pro Trucks invaded Thompson Speedway for their 35-lap main event with Todd Taylor in command and Devin Deshaies in tow. Their battle for the lead would be short lived with a pair of rough start cautions for John Pereira, Brad Stricklind and Sean Caron. Once the field returned to green, it was lights-out for Todd Taylor as he led every lap en-route to the Cindy Burdick Memorial win over Jason Paquette and Deshaies at the line.
Mike Christopher Jr. and Ron Silk brought the Outlaw Open Modified field to green for the Nutmeg State 50 presented by Twisted Tea with Christopher quickly taking the launch out front. Although just fifty short laps around the Thompson 5/8-mile oval, the top five in Silk, Jon McKennedy, Ronnie Williams and Matt Swanson seemed content to play follow-the-leader early on. Swanson fell out with motor issues on lap nine and it took till lap 30 for Ron Silk to start hitting the ‘go’ button.
Pulling up to Christopher, Silk peeked inside with McKennedy growing ever closer in third, waiting for whatever may come. With laps winding down McKennedy made his move under Silk for second and on lap 42 powered his way under Christopher in turn three and never looked back. Jon McKennedy took down the Nutmeg State 50 presented by Twisted Tea with Mike Christpher Jr. and Ron Silk joining him in victory lane.
Nick Lascuola and Charles Bailey brought the Thompson Late Models to green with Bailey quickly going three wide with former champion Brian Tagg and Jake Johnson in the fight for second. With Johnson making it through that fight, he set his sights on Lascuola and took the fresh-air lead on lap five. After a three-peat of midway cautions, Johnson continued his strangle-hold on the lead all the way to his first win of the season followed across the stripe by Lascuola and Tagg to round out the podium.
The SK Light Modifieds were next on the track with Corey Caddick and Sami Anderson leading the two lanes under the green flag. Anthony Forino’s lick with the turn three wall called out the lap 2 caution with Caddick again dominating the lead as Meg Fuller quickly fell out of a second-place run back to sixth on the restart. Soon a shot-for-shot battle between Caddick and Robert Bloxsom III made for great racing up front with Nick Hovey and John O’Sullvain watching in the wings.
Hovey motored to lead lap 12 with O’Sullivan also passing around Caddick to chase down the leader by inches off the back bumper. Caddick found the outside around O’Sullivan to jump back in second to again work on Hovey with four laps remaining. Bump-drafting down the length of both straightaways, Caddick made his move back down low under the two-to-go signal, fell back in line under the white flag and tried to go to the topside in turn one. The top proved unavailable as he slid into the wall, giving Nick Hovey the win over O’Sullivan and Bloxsom to end their 20-lap main event.
Sixteen strong, the Street Stocks rebounded with the simplified, more open rules package. Ryan Lineham’s battle with Icebreaker winner Brandon Plemons put on a stellar show just before George Baldwin entered the picture with five laps remaining. Baldwin made his move late in the going to steal away the win and the Eden Rafferty bonus in the process.
The Thunderstock Crown Vics rounded out Wednesday’s program with Ethan Williams claiming his second win of the season over Dylan Cabral and Tyrese Mello under the final twin checkered flags of the evening.
Thompson Speedway is back in action on Wednesday, July 9 with the Twisted Tea Midsummer 50. The Outlaw Open Modifieds are back for their second $5,000-to-win Dash for Cash of the summer season along with the NEMA Lites in a special Wednesday showdown at the Big-T! The Wednesday midweek special will also include the Thompson Speedway track championship divisions for another epic night on the Thompson highbanks with a 6:00pm start.
