McKennedy Goes Two-for-Two in Twisted Tea Dash for Cash Showdowns
/Brayden Egan Nabs First Career NEMA Win!
Thompson, CT — Following two qualifying heat races, Jon McKennedy and Matt Swanson faced-off at the head of the Outlaw Open Modifieds in the Twisted Tea Midsummer 50. Ronnie Williams motored under Swanson to take second on lap ten but otherwise the top five remained in line to conserve to the end. The conservation came into play with the lap 39 spin and flat left-front tire for Glen Steger in turn four, with Williams and Chris Pasteryak electing to jump pitside to swap tires, front to rear on the right side.
The pit treatment didn’t work in their favor as both Pasteryak and Williams were involved in a turn two dust-up on the restart, earning Pasteryak a ride on the wrecker and Williams stuck on pit road with mechanical woes. Steger’s third caution of the night set up a green, white, checkered with McKennedy once again looking as if he was shot from a cannon to take a second consecutive $5,000 Dash for Cash victory in the Twisted Tea Midsummer 50 with Matt Swanson and Mikey Flynn rounding out the top three.
The NEMA Lites started their evening in memory of their longtime race director and family member Cynthia Tebbetts who passed suddenly and unexpectedly early this week. Under green, Brayden Egan launched to the front in search of his first NEMA win as Jake Trainer and Randy Cabral made short work of the pack to follow in second and third by lap six. Trainer took over the lead on lap eight with Cabral stalled two-and-a-half seconds back in third. Egan kept Trainer in his sights, gaining speed and real estate with ten laps remaining before Trainer’s engine expired with five-to-go!
Brayden Egan motored into a comfortable lead in the closing laps as the battle for fourth went wild with Cabral sliding back into a five car battle. Out front, in a storybook setting, Brayden Egan took down his first career NEMA Lite win at the Big-T over Zach Martinez and Kyle Valeiri.
Polesitter Brandon Plemons spun himself out of the lead on lap seven in the Street Stock 20-lap main, leaving the double trouble of Andrew Gillis and George Baldwin at the front. After another spin caution for Mike Malbaurn, Baldwin survived the melee for his second win in a row, ‘Leadfoot’ Larry Barnett hung on for second in a spirited battle with Nick Anderson, who came home third.
Rookies Zack Sangermano and Nathan Pytko brought the Thompson Sunoco Modified field to green for their second 50-lap showdown of the season with Keith Rocco and Todd Owen quickly getting to first and second by lap two. Rocco’s hope for two-in-a-row went up in white smoke on lap 15, leaving Owen to contend with Derek Ramstrom. Owen continued his Sunday drive all the way to his second win of the season followed by Ramstrom and Sangermano on the podium.
Jared Materas and rookie Jared Roy led the Late Model field to green with Jake Johnson quickly making his way through the middle of the pack to lead lap 4. First-timer Tyler Chapman’s spin in turn four off the hood of Zach Robinson brought out the caution on lap 19 before both called out a second caution on lap 21. Regardless, Jake Johnson kept it lean and green up front to take his second win of the year with Brian Tagg in second and Nick Lascola in third.
Sami Anderson and Corey Caddick kicked off the SK Light Modified showdown Wednesday Night but all eyes were on point leader Nick Hovey. A two-by-two freight train at the front saw the polesitters, Hovey, John O’Sullivan and Meghan Fuller in a beehive fury, leading to a near photo finish at the end. Hovey edged out Caddick at the line by just 0.122 seconds before Caddick’s eventual disqualification in post-race inspection for a carburetor infraction gifted second place to Anderson with O’Sullivan rounding out the top three.
Dave Trudeau took off like a rocket sled on rails, nabbing the Mini Stock lead before the halfway point and never looking back for his second four-cylinder win of the year with Bill Porter and Ryan Pomposelli rounding out the top three. The Thunderstock Crown Vics saw Ethan Williams nab the win with Dylan Cabral and Tyrese Mello on the podium.
