Patrick Emerling Runs it Back in the Big Red Machine Tribute to take 750th NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Checkers in front of Packed Thompson Grandstands
/Thompson, CT — An incredible flood of fans entered Thompson Speedway on Wednesday night for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour’s annual midweek Thompson 150 with plenty of magic in the air. Along with a much anticipated visit from Geoff Bodine and the original Big Red Machine #1 from his stellar 1978 campaign, the NASCAR touring teams battled in the Tour’s 750th event back where it all began in 1985.
Ron Silk got the capacity crowd on their feet during Hoosier Racing Tire qualifying as he earned the pole position by just breaking the nineteen-second mark with an 18.999-second run. Silk launched on the start of the 750th NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event with a rearview mirror full of Thompson arch-rival Justin Bonsignore. The first cation flag flew on lap 14 as Eric Berndt moved up across the front bumper of Luke Baldwin at the start/finish line sending Berndt into the wall and Baldwin pitside for damage control.
Silk maintained control at the front of the field until the hard turn one wreck for Baldwin around lap 70 as the leaders jumped pitside for fresh Hoosier rubber. Jon McKennedy led the pack under the return to green and pulled away from Stephen Kopcik, Jake Johnson and point leader Austin Beers as Silk and Bonsignore began the long march from deep in the field. A turn-two-tap between Kopcik and McKennedy rapidly took both out of the top five with Johnson stealing the show out front.
As laps wound down, Patrick Emerling made his case known as he grew ever closer to Johnson’s rear bumper. Emerling pulled up on lap 124 to lead lap 125 and fortunately never had to deal with another caution period. Unspoiled, Patrick Emerling took down the Thompson 150 win in the Big Red Machine look-a-like #1 complete with Geoff Bodine in the 750th NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victory lane celebration!
The Street Stocks started off Wednesday’s feature racing action with Larry Barnett firing off with the lead but getting a rearview mirror full of George Baldwin by lap five. Faster in the corners, Baldwin shot under Barnett to lead lap six and marched to his third win in as many races over Wade Gelinas and Barnett at the line.
Todd Doulliard and Corey Caddick looked like the class of the field, pacing the SK Light Modifieds in their 20-lap main event but Nick Covey came up through the pack hungry for win number four. Hovey took over at the halfway point and without cautions went on unchallenged to the end with Caddick and John O’Sullivan rounding out the podium.
Young Ryan Battle got the jump on former New England Supermodified Series (NESS) champion Dan Bowes to lead the first of 30 green flag laps. After stalking for the first half of the race, Bowes finally had the horsepower to slide underneath battle to lead lap 19 as Jeffrey Battle powered through the field to pass his own brother Ryan for second. Bowes cruised to the win with Battle and defending champion Bobby Timmons following.
Tim Door launched from the pole position of the Mini Stock 15-lap main event before the lap five caution saw point leader Dave Trudeau, Door and Bill Porter relegated to the rear. Ryan Pomposelli took the gift of the restart lead and never took his foot off the skinny pedal to win his second of the year over Door and Randy Churchill Jr.
Derek Ramstrom launched off with the lead in the Thompson Sunoco Modifieds but Keith Rocco pulled up to his rear bumper by lap six. Rocco led at the halfway point following a pair of over-under passes for the lead swapped between the two leaders as Todd Owen thundered into the picture. Rocco set sail out front to take the 30 lap win with Ramstrom and Owen rounding out the top three.
Jared Materas and rookie Jared Roy brought the Late Model field down to round out the Thompson 150 program Wednesday night. Roy quickly took over the lead as Brian Tagg and Jake Johnson battled for second side-by-side. Johnson broke away and took the lead over Roy at lap six and in classic style never looked back for another Late Model win on the highbanks with Jacob ‘Rowdy’ Burns and Tyler Chapman rounding out the final podium of a packed Wednesday program.
Thompson Speedway is back for the final Wednesday night showdown of the season with the Fall Showdown on September 17. The Outlaw Open Modified Series returns with their 50-lap Dash for Cash while the Late Models will also have a 50-lap, big-money showdown with more details to be released soon! The Thompon Sunoco Modifieds, SK Light Modifieds, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks and Crown Vics also return for the final midweek show of the season on Wednesday, September 17.
